Day 8: The Best Productivity Hack
The ups and downs of writing daily, interviewing for a dream contract role, having the Success Secret Society enrollment open, while also working on content and streamlining marketing has put my energy levels through the ringer.
Although I love having the opportunity to work so freely and not be managed by anyone, sometimes that “freedom” can feel like handcuffs.
Task initiation and executive functioning are both things that people with ADHD struggle with A LOT. And that’s usually on a good day.
Imagine having burned through all your brain’s happy juices and the visual of what’s left in your skull is something resembling a serving of lumpy mashed potatoes.
That’s how I feel. Or, that’s how I felt this morning. I had a whole day ahead of me and eleventy billion (a phrase one of our SSS members says which cracks me up every time) things floating through my head.
After spinning out for about an hour I grabbed one of too many notebooks I have going right now (side note: I really thought this morning…. I just need to buy the perfect notebook so I can get organized while a whole stack of notebooks glared at me) and my trusty cube timer (*LINK).
I set the timer to 10 minutes and wrote down all the work things I needed to do. The hour I spent stalling was filled with household activities which is always my procrastination go-to so at least none of that made it to my list.
After I’d written down about 8 things (varying from: edit podcast to create a LinkedIn posting strategy) in the 10 minutes I still felt overwhelmed.
So, I turned the timer over to 3 minutes and prioritized tasks from A - D. There were only a few A items with most being C. From there, I got to work.
Getting some of those A tasks done tapped into my brain juice reserves which assisted with energy to write this.
