Day 164: Choose to be Privileged
Today I had lunch with a lady I met on Instagram. She found me somehow. Maybe hashtags? I think she found my NBA page first, not my personal account.
I was enamored by her work ethic and how generous she was when reaching out asking if she could help with anything. The hustle was real.
Then I heard her podcast interview. She opened up about having kids with special needs. It clicked. Her drive. Work ethic. Generosity and faith.
Earlier this week I saw an African guide tell an American traveler (who asked), you know you have privilege if you have a choice. If you can choose between this and between that. It was definitely an AHA moment.
If you have privilege, you are lucky. And I think a lot of us do have it but don’t realize it. Because we don’t think we have a choice in the matter.
My new biz boss buddy doesn’t have a choice about having kids with special needs, but she has a choice on how she will support them. And she is supporting them to the best of her abilities.
Naturally we talked about toxic clients. I told her she needs to protect her gift and her light. She’s very magnetic and very talented. I shared about my recent full time experience and she told me about a situation she had.
Without going into too much detail about our personal conversation, someone saw her gift and light and offered her a full time role. She told them to shove it. Just kidding, she’s way more diplomatic and professional than me. I mean, I’m totally fronting…I’d never tell someone to shove it (well, in my head I would).
She had the opportunity to be supported by a salary but she chose herself. Despite being tested by a toxic client she recognized that it was in fact a test. All those jerks you deal with, they are teaching you something!
So, she had the privilege of choosing between a full time salary and consistency… or continuing to go all in on herself. And dammit she made the right choice.
Her drive, commitment for supporting her kids, generosity, faith, and professionalism are going to have her standing on the highest peak before she knows it. Fortune favors the bold and i’m glad I met her when I did. She’s a constant source of inspiration and I told her that I love seeing someone do what I wanted to do with NBA but got in my own way about.
That wasn’t in the cards for me. Something else is planned.
Speaking of which, I literally just submitted my synopsis and narrative sample before typing this entry to you. My whole book is mapped out. Well, not all of it. But I’m flipping out with having it sit in someones inbox now!
