Day 63: Thoughts on AI and Work/Writing

Unless this is the first post that you’ve read by me you know my thoughts on AI when it comes to writing.

In one entry (Day ) I talk about my fears of AI dumbing down people.

I gotta say though, I get the hype with ChatGPT.

The first time I heard about it was at a chamber leadership meeting where the chair of the Young Professionals Network foamed at the mouth about it. He asked everyone at the table what they wanted to know more about. He would type something into his cell then a couple seconds later he started to spout stuff off.

I didn’t know what I wanted to know. So I passed when it was my turn. Before I told him to go on I asked: “What’s the difference between this and Google?”. Excitedly he shared that this was way more in-depth than a search engine and would ultimately replace Google.

When I got back to my office the thought of vegetarian keto friendly lunches to bring to work. The scroll started and I was shook. I could eat more than cottage cheese, hard boiled eggs, nuts, and cucumbers. WOAH!

After that I didn’t use it much. Really only to check my grammar and if I duplicated words.

While I consulted for a marketing agency I got very overwhelmed and started getting weekly coaching. During one session the coach, who was an OB/GYN prior to becoming a coach, told me her husband was a marketing exec and used ChatGPT a lot. She asked, “Why don’t you use ChatGPT?”. I told her it felt like cheating. Which is funny because the consulting contract was for billable hours, not a retainer. She told me that the expectation to have all the information in my head was unrealistic. And she compared it to when she was practicing medicine. She went through all the schooling and graduated. But there were still times she would have patients and need to consult resources. She shared ways her husband used it for marketing and my resistance was gone. That one convo helped me so much with the mental barrier around using it for client work.

AI for the ADHD brain is such a gift. I was able to feed ChatGPT all my notes, thoughts, impressions, and what I thought would work best. Then it did its magic and formatted everything in a cohesive way. Just having the ability to comb through and delete what I thought was too heavy of a lift was amazing.

I hold strong on my belief that AI shouldn’t be used when writing. For me. I’m getting less specific on how I think other people should live their lives. I have my personal ethos and it’s ok for others to have theirs.

With the very real impacts on the environment that come from using AI people should make sure they are aware and consider what their personal perimeters are around using it.

Ok, one last thing: what’s with Al Gore and everything interwebs? Al Gore supposedly invented the internet. And then you have the algorithm (AlGoreRythm!) … and AI looks just like Al. I wonder what’s next.

Today’s entry is sponsored by the first apple cider of the season. It had 20g of sugar! That’s definitely not keto. And I definitely have a sugar high. Hopefully there’s no crash before making dinner!
