Day 64: Eat Shit Christmas Injuries

I just asked the 17 yo what I should write about and he said, “Making up for things you missed out on last year.”. He likely suggested that because I have Christmas music playing on my TV. I had it on last night for dinner.

I’ve been playing it since last week. When they give me a hard time about it, “it’s still November!”, “Where’s the Thanksigiving music?”, “It’s too soon” I reminded them that I was robbed of Christmas with a broken collarbone.

On December 23 my sons and I met up with my sisters family for our annual Capitol tree trip. My sister was giddy over the idea of us all flying down the streets of DC on scooters. Her family had done that earlier in the year and she thought it was the coolest.

We got to the spot and there was only one scooter and the rest were e-bikes. We downloaded the app, signed a bunch of disclaimers, made payment and hit the road. My youngest was on the scooter.

We got about 2 - 3 blocks into the ride and my sister and her daughter were way ahead. It was 7 pm so pitch black. It was also like 20 degrees out. My youngest was behind me.

I kept thinking “this is terrifying”. Then…for a brief moment I thought, “Wow, this is exhilarating. Im in the nations capitol with my family. The wind is in my face but I feel warm. I feel alive.”. The street we were on had construction happening so there was even less light from the building and street lamps. The road had ridges in it so I decided to move closer to the curb. There was a dip next to the sewer which was enough to make me lose control of the handle bars and I ended up flying onto the sidewalk with the bike landing on top of me. My poor kid who was behind me kept screaming “ are you ok mom, mom are you ok?”. I couldn’t answer, I was in shock and wasn’t sure what hurt worse. My knee, hip, ribs, or shoulder.

Anyways, I lived. But ended up missing a lot of the holiday season. I vowed to myself over the summer (when I finally moved our tiny artificial tree from the kitchen to the basement) that this upcoming season would be amazing. For god’s sake we only have this and one more season before the kid goes to college. Ugh. Barf.

Since having him I have: broken my elbow on Christmas eve, broke my foot on December 3, and most recently broken my collarbone. Robbed of Christmas. Not this year! We are setting everything up the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Side note: I have asked a couple times if I could start now. I keep getting no’s.

Until next Sunday you can picture me with my Christmas music happy as a clam!
