Day 137: I Feel Like an A$$h0le Saying This, But…

Never underestimate the effectiveness of prefacing a comment with, “I feel like an asshole saying this, but…”

I can assure you that with over a decade of leading communities, facilitating, hosting and speaking at over 100 events: that line is magic.

It is a great equalizer.

A lot of people are afraid to truly share themselves because they worry that what they are thinking is off mark, insensitive, too much.

The more often I openly shared the thoughts that I believed made me an asshole, the more women I connected with.

I would see a couple grins and nods. You know, permission to move forward with my thoughts.

The kicker with this preface is it has to legit make you feel like an asshole.

Like tonight at basketball when I was talking to one of my favorite people. She asked how I’ve been doing with the storm. I told her about the covid. And then “I feel like an asshole saying this, but I think …”. You had to be there. She then said she felt exactly the same way.

When you speak your mind, you aren’t allowing these thoughts to make you feel like a bad mom, spouse, friend, business owner, sibling, etc. Because you are openly and honestly sharing your experience.

It’s magic, try it.
